La battaglia di Tannenberg fu il primo grande scontro della prima guerra mondiale sul fronte orientale; svoltasi fra il 26 e il 30 agosto 1914, si concluse con una completa vittoria delle forze tedesche che, guidate dal generale Paul von Hindenburg e dal suo abile capo di Stato maggiore, generale Erich Ludendorff, accerchiarono, dopo alcuni momenti di difficoltà, le truppe russe che erano avanzate in Prussia orientale.
