Elvas si trova a soli 8 km da Badajoz. La città fu fondata dai romani con il nome di Alpesa. Durante la riconquista, la città cadde inizialmente nel 1166 nelle mani del re del Portogallo, ma poi tornò sotto il controllo degli arabi. Alla fine, la città divenne portoghese nel 1126. Dal 1570 Elvas ha una sede vescovile. La città ha giocato un ruolo importante nelle guerre di confine del XVII secolo.
