Francisco Martins Sarmento nacque a Guimarães nel 1833. Uomo di discreta fortuna, dedicò il suo tempo a indagare le origini della terra che gli diede il suo essere e si distinse come archeologo ed etnologo , dedicandosi alla supervisione degli scavi e allo studio della Citânia de Briteiros e del Castro de Sabroso.
Morì a Guimarães nel 1899 e fu il giorno subito dopo la sua morte che il consiglio comunale di Guimarães decise di intitolare questa piazza Largo de Martins Sarmento.
