Francisco Martins Sarmento werd geboren in Guimarães in 1833. Als man met een redelijk fortuin bracht hij zijn tijd door met het onderzoeken van de oorsprong van het land dat hem zijn wezen gaf en onderscheidde hij zich als archeoloog en etnoloog, waarbij hij zich wijdde aan het begeleiden van opgravingen en het bestuderen van de Citânia de Briteiros en Castro de Sabroso.
Hij stierf in Guimarães in 1899, en het was op de dag onmiddellijk na zijn dood dat de gemeenteraad van Guimarães besloot dit plein Largo de Martins Sarmento te noemen.
