La Biblioteca pubblica di Braga fu fondata nel 1841 dalla regina Maria II per proteggere le librerie dei conventi scomparsi della regione, come Falperra, Tibães e Congregados.
Originariamente, la biblioteca era lì. La collezione è stata ampliata con il deposito legale e dal 1931 include una copia delle pubblicazioni pubblicate in Portogallo. Allo stesso tempo, il museo ha accolto collezioni di personalità e istituzioni locali, come Manuel Monteiro, Carrington da Costa, Victor de Sá, Manuel de Oliveira e il Minhoto Institute of Regional Studies, per citarne solo alcune.
Dal 1934 la BPB ha sede nell'ala barocca del complesso di Largo do Paço, in Praça do Município, ed è stata integrata nell'UMinho nel 1975.
Ospita una collezione di oltre 500.000 documenti, tra cui una raccolta di 53 incunaboli (dei primi tempi della stampa) e almeno 400 volumi del XVI secolo.
