La sua denominazione è per certi versi ingannevole, poiché il "Vecchio Ullevi" è in realtà più moderno e recente rispetto al vicino "Nuovo Ullevi". Il motivo è dato dal fatto che l'attuale Gamla Ullevi, costruito tra il 2007 e il 2009, ha mantenuto il nome del precedente impianto che sorgeva su quell'area sin dal 1916.
