Wat Chai Sri Phum è stato costruito nel 1519 durante il regno del re Phra Mueang Kaeo (regno 1495-1525). Il monastero fu stabilito in un luogo propizio dove si trovava un albero di fico considerato un portatore di buona fortuna per la città. Il monastero è stato ristrutturato nel 1837 durante il regno del principe Phuthawong (principe Phutthawong o Buddhavansa, regno 1826-1846) ed è ora conosciuto localmente come Wat Phan Ta Kun.
