La battaglia di Galizia fu combattuta nella fase iniziale della prima guerra mondiale sul fronte orientale dal 23 agosto all'11 settembre 1914 e si concluse, dopo una serie di aspri e sanguinosi scontri, con una netta vittoria dell'esercito russo che inflisse pesanti perdite alle armate austro-ungariche, avanzando in profondità nel territorio dell'Impero austro-ungarico e conquistando la grande città di Leopoli.
La vittoria russa ebbe notevole importanza politico-strategica rinsaldando il morale delle popolazioni dell'Impero nonostante la contemporanea sconfitta di Tannenberg contro i tedeschi in Prussia orientale; a causa delle dure perdite e della lunga ritirata, l'esercito austro-ungarico subì un indebolimento irreversibile della sua forza e della sua coesione.
