Černihiv , è una città con importanza storica del nord dell'Ucraina, centro amministrativo dell'oblast' omonimo, nonché del proprio distretto. Nel 2015 aveva una popolazione di 294.727 abitanti
La città viene menzionata per la prima volta in un trattato di pace tra l'Impero Bizantino e la Rus' di Kiev risalente al 907 ma si suppone che essa debba essere esistita almeno a partire dal IX secolo, in virtu' di alcuni ritrovamenti archeologici in un insediamento dove sono stati trovati manufatti appartenenti alla popolazione cazara. Verso la fine del X secolo la città testimonia la presenza di propri governanti locali e fu nel suo territorio che intorno a quest'epoca venne eretto il Tumulo nero, un tumulo dove vennero ritrovati sepolti alcuni principi locali.
