The Wainwright Building è una costruzione di St. Louis, Missouri. Costruito nel 1891 con il progetto di Dankmar Adler e Louis Sullivan considerato uno dei primi grattacieli del mondo
Si distingue per la soppressione degli elementi orizzontali, già evidente nel Marshall Field's di Richardson. È articolato da una griglia di pilastri rivestiti di mattoni, mentre gli elementi orizzontali sono arretrati e ricoperti di terracotta, così da fondersi con la finestratura. I pilastri sfilavano da un terzo sbarramento di pietra di due piani e terminano bruscamente con una cornice in cotto, massiccia e decorata.
