Hoksem is een gehucht van Hoegaarden, het ligt aan de beek die vroeger de scheiding vormde tussen twee bisdommen Luik en Mechelen. De kerk werd opgetrokken in steen afkomstig uit Gobertange en Overlaar. Deze kerk vertoont de kenmerken van de zuivere gotiek, de Romaanse toren dateert uit de 12de eeuw. De kerk werd zowel in de 14de als in de 16de en 17de eeuw vergroot en vernieuwd. Op de toren staat zowel een haan als een hen, zeer uitzonderlijk in België.
Jaarlijks gaat de Sint-Jansprocessie uit.
