De Italiaanse naam van de Plöcken Pass is Passo di Monte Croce Carnico. Het is afgeleid van het Latijn Monte Crucis ("berg van het kruis"), een aanduiding van de pas in de middeleeuwen. In de vallei van de rivier de Gail waren nederzettingen sinds het Neolithicum. Er wat tevens een ruiterpad in de bronstijd. Romeinse troepen onder leiding van generaal Tiberius herbouwden het pad na de oprichting van de provincie Noricum in 15 voor Christus, met als doel om de nieuw veroverde gebieden ten noorden van de Karnische Alpen van Italië te bereiken. De goed aangelegde weg was in gebruik gedurende de middeleeuwen en was een onderdeel van de handelsroute tussen Aquileia en Salzburg.
