Het Theater an der Wien is een theater in Wenen. Het theater heeft circa 1120 zitplaatsen. Het theater is geopend in 1801 en heeft een fameuze geschiedenis. Ook heden ten dage is het een belangrijk operahuis en theater.
Het theater was het geesteskind van de Weense impresario Emanuel Schikaneder, die bekend is geworden als librettist en ensceneur van de opera Die Zauberflöte van Mozart . Schikaneders gezelschap had al verschillende jaren met succes opgetreden in Wenen in het kleinere 800 zitplaatsen tellende Theater auf der Wieden, waar Die Zauberflöte in première was gegaan. Schikaneder, wiens uitvoeringen vaak met spektakel en vele scènewisselingen gepaard gingen, wilde graag een groter en beter uitgerust theater voor zijn werk.
