Tegenwoordig is Mielen-boven-Aalst een deelgemeente van de Belgische gemeente Gingelom in de provincie Limburg.
Tot 1971 was Mielen-boven-Aalst een zelfstandige gemeente met 750 onwoners en na de fusie van 1977 werd het een deelgemeente van Borlo in Droog Haspengouw.
De kern van Mielen-boven-Aalst spreidt zich uit langs beide oevers van de Melsterbeek en volgens een noord-zuid oriëntatie.
De neogotische Sint-Saturninuskerk van omstreeks 1850 bevindt zich in het centrum van het dorp en beschikt over een laatgotisch koor uit de 16e eeuw en 13e-eeuwse Maaslandse doopvont.
