De Sint-Barbarakerk is een voorbeeld van een mijnkathedraal. Alle mijnkathedralen, er zijn er ook in Winterslag, Waterschei, Zwartberg en Beringen, dateren uit het interbellum. Ze zijn opgetrokken in baksteen, ogen indrukwekkend en enigszins buitenproportioneel. Sint-Barbara in Eisden is in 1934 ontworpen door Auguste vanden Nieuwenborg in een expressionistische stijl met neo-gotische elementen.
De ontginning van steenkool heeft in Limburg, meer dan in de Borinage, aanleiding geven tot deze prachtige architectuur. Overal in de Kempense mijnstreek staan er uiteraard vooreerst unieke industriële installaties, maar ook goed bewaarde woonwijken en imposante ingenieurs- en directiewoningen. Vanop de vierkante spitsloze toren, 53 meter hoog, 300 treden, heb je overigens een riant uitzicht op de knappe urbanisatie van het gebied, en op de tuinwijk of cité.
