Het leopold kanaal werd in 1846-1849 gegraven. Pastoor Jozef Olivier Andries van Middelburg (bij Maldegem) was de grote bezieler van het project. De man was lid van het Nationaal Congres, volksvertegenwoordiger en kanunnik van de Brugse kathedraal. Toen de Nederlanders na de Belgische onafhankelijkheidstrijd alle uitwateringsluizen naar de Westerschelde afsloten, heerste er veel wateroverlast en de daarmee gepaard gaande polder- en moeraskoorts. Het nieuwe kanaal moest het overtollige water rechtstreeks in zee lozen. Dat het water schoon is, zorgt ervoor dat het verderop in de volksmond 'den Blinker' heet. Dit in tegenstelling met 'den Stinker', het Afleidingskanaal van de Leie, dat minder zuiver water in zee loost.
