Op het G. Maczekplein, nabij de Lakenmarkt, werd als herinnering aan de bevrijding van de stad door de Eerste Poolse Pantserdivisie onder bevel van Generaal Stanislaw Maczek in 1944 een authentieke Shermantank als monument opgericht. Ook generaal Maczek werd in een bronzen creatie van Jef Claerhout in Tielt vereeuwigd. Naar aanleiding van de 50ste verjaardag van de bevrijding van Tielt en regio werd het standbeeld op het Polenplein onthuld op de bevrijdingsdag op 8 september 1994. Nu nog herinneren diverse herdenkingsplaatsen aan de acht in Tielt gesneuvelde Poolse soldaten, die hun laatste rustplaats vonden op het Tieltse militaire kerkhof.
