Dit plein dankt zijn naam aan de Brusselse architect Joseph Poelaert (1817-1879) die verantwoordelijk was voor het ontwerp van het Justitiepaleis.
Vanop het Poelaertplein heeft men een adembenemend zicht over de stad Brussel.
Een nabijgelegen lift verbindt het plein met de wijk de Marollen. Men kan iedere dag tussen 7u en 23u30 gebruik maken van deze "service".
