Als je de schoonheid van deze Sint-Hubertusgalerijen bewondert kan je niet bedenken wat soort vreselijke geschiedenis aan de constuctie voorafging. In het prachtige boek Brutopia beschrijf reporter en auteur Pascal Verbeken hoe de volkswijk Îlot Sacré, een gewone volksbuurt, met de grond gelijk gemaakt werd nadat men bijna 10 jaar de eigenaars het leven zuur maakte om op te krassen. Een wanhopige barbier, Pameel, sneed zich zelf de hals over met een scheermes uit wanhoop en protest. Maar dat belette niet om hier één van de meest populaire trekpleisters van de stad neer te zetten in 1846: de Sint-Hubertusgalerijen. Het was ook het jaar dat Karl Marx hier in Brussel verbleef. Hij gaf ook commentaar op de onmenselijke benadering bij deze sloop en bouw. Hij vond het een "afspiegeling van de macro-economische realiteit: de bovenklasse die haar almacht misbruikt tegen een machteloze onderklasse".
