Hechtel is een dorp en tot 1977 een zelfstandige gemeente in het noorden van de Belgische provincie Limburg. Sindsdien is het een deelgemeente van Hechtel-Eksel.
Hechtel werd in 1160 voor het eerst vermeld, en wel als Hectela, mogelijk afgeleid van heg of haag. De naam Hectala figureerde in een overdrachtsacte van een hoeve, De Briel genaamd, aan de Abdij van Averbode.
