De Limburgse Kempen worden gekenmerkt door uitgestrekte heidelandschappen en landduinen. Maar ook het Kempens Plateau rondom Opgrimbie en de Kempense Laagvlakte behoren tot de Limburgse Kempen. De zuidgrens wordt gevormd door de rivier de Demer. De oostgrens door de Maasvallei. Die Maasvallei gaat over naar het Kempens Plateau via een trap van gemiddeld 45 meter.
