Een opvallend weetje over Malderen is dat in het midden van de 19de eeuw, Frans Meert uit Malderen een buitengewoon mechanisch uurwerk bouwde dat niet alleen de tijd aangaf, maar ook astronomische gegevens, zoals de positie van planeten en het verloop van de seizoenen. Dit indrukwekkende mechaniek was te bewonderen in de herberg aan het station van Malderen, waar elke ochtend een mechanische mis werd gecelebreerd door het uurwerk zelf.
