Durbuy ligt in de bekende kalkzoom van devoonkalksteen. De kalkzoom is een smalle band ten zuiden van de Fagne-Famenne en bestaat zo goed als uitsluitend uit kalksteen van het Boven-Devoon. Het is net een traptrede voor de Ardennen. Ze ligt een stuk hoger dan de Fagne-Famenne depressie. De rivieren vanuit de Ardennen, en die deze streek passeren, geven oorsprong aan spectaculaire oplossingsverschijnselen. In de geologie noemt met deze oplossingsverschijnselen karst.
