Het belangrijkste kenmerk van de dam van Gileppe is een 13,5 meter hoge en 180 ton zware leeuw uit zandsteen. Wist je dat de orientatie van de leeuw niet zo maar toevallig is. De leeuw staat bovenop de dammuur en werd zo neergezet zodat hij trots uitkijkt in de richting van de slechts 5 kilometer verwijderde grens met het toenmalige Pruisen. De stuwdam werd ingehuldigd door koning Leopold II op 28 juli 1878. En in die tijd was Pruisen een belangrijk land om naar uit te kijken!
