Het koetshuis was vroeger een onderdeel van een groter kasteelcomplex. In 1815 was dit kasteel enkele maanden de verblijfplaats van de Engelse generaal Mercer die zich hier in Strijtem voorbereidde om onder leiding van Wellington de Fransen een pandoering te gaan geven in Waterloo.
