Op 30 september 1937 werd Maxime Brunfauts Sanatorium Joseph Lemaire onder internationale belangstelling geopend. Het modernistische gebouw deed dienst als sanatorium voor tbc- patiënten en nadien als verzorgingstehuis. Toen het sanatorium 50 jaar later, in 1987, werd gesloten, ging het een onzekere toekomst tegemoet. Na 20 jaar leegstand bleef er nog slechts een schim over van de glorie waarin het gebouw 70 jaar eerder werd geopend. Naar aanleiding van deze 'verjaardagen' werd de actie RedHetSanatorium opgestart.
