Het kasteel vormde het hart van de gemeente. In de Eerste Wereldoorlog vestigde de generale staf van het Vierde Leger er zich. De eigenaars, baron en barones de Montblanc, kregen slechts enkele kamers ter beschikking in hun eigen kasteel. Toen haar man aan het begin van de oorlog overleed, bleef de barones alleen achter, omringd door de legerleiding.
