De huidige kerk dateert uit 1764. De vorige kerk werd op Kerstdag 1763 door een brand vernield. De patroonheilige van Ledegem is de Heilige Petrus in de Banden. Deze wordt aanbeden voor wat in de volksmond heet “het Katherinawiel”. De kerk bezit een prachtige preekstoel en vier mooie biechtstoelen, alsook enkele waardevolle schilderijen. “De verrijzenis van Lazarus” van Joseph Ducq (Ledegem 1762 - Brugge 1829) dateert uit 1800 en is een kopie van een schilderij uit de 17de eeuw. Joseph Ducq is zonder enige twijfel de bekendste Ledegemse kunstschilder. De Sint-Petruskerk werd op 23 juli 1993 beschermd als monument.
