Bekkerzeel is een "villa-dorp" is, wat wil zeggen een dorp waar kasteel en kerk onafscheidelijk met elkaar zijn verbonden als groeikern van de gemeente. Voortgaande op het -zele toponiem gaat deze "villa" zeker terug tot de Frankische periode (7de eeuw). Te Bekkerzeel vestigde een Frankische herenboer zich nabij de Schapenbaan, dit is de oude Romeinse baan van Asse naar Elewijt en de weg die naar Bijgaarden leidt.
