Elverdinge, dat tijdens de oorlog enkele kilometers achter het front lag, heerste gedurende de ganse oorlog een heel drukke militaire activiteit. De gemeente werd zowel door Franse als door Engelse troepen ingepalmd, hoevegebouwen en kampementen deden dienst als slaapplaatsen of medische posten, smalsporen zorgden voor de bevoorrading van de troepen, winkeltjes voor de extra-bevoorrading... Het gevolg van dit alles was dat het dorp een uitstekend doelwit was voor de vijandelijke artillerie.
