Elverdinge, das während des Krieges einige Kilometer hinter der Frontlinie lag, war während des gesamten Krieges von sehr regem militärischen Aktivitäten geprägt. Die Gemeinde wurde sowohl von französischen als auch von englischen Truppen besetzt, Gehöfte und Lager dienten als Schlafplätze oder medizinische Posten, Schmalspurbahnen sorgten für die Versorgung der Truppen, kleine Geschäfte für die zusätzliche Belieferung... Die Folge hiervon war, dass das Dorf ein hervorragendes Ziel für die feindliche Artillerie war.
