Mortsel is een stad in de Belgische provincie Antwerpen. De stad telt ruim 25.000 inwoners. Binnen de stadsgrenzen liggen geen andere kernen. De stad behoort tot het kieskanton Kontich en het achtste gerechtelijk kanton Antwerpen.
De oudste schriftelijke vermelding van Mortsel, als Mortsella, dateert uit 1158. De naam zou zijn afgeleid van de Germaanse woorden mor en sali . Samengesteld geeft dit dan "Een uit één ruimte bestaand huis, gebouwd in het moeras".
