Plantkundige Adolf Papeleu (1811-1859) was dé pionier van de commerciële boomkwekerij en rozenteelt. Hij vestigde zich na zijn expedities in Midden-Amerika op de Boskantse hei in 1847. Zijn 65 hectare grote bedrijf kweekte vooral sparren en fruitbomen en voerde uit naar Frankrijk en Duitsland. Na zijn dood nam zijn meesterknecht de kwekerij over en startten enkele werklieden hun eigen bedrijven. Wetteren en omstreken werd een lappendeken van boomkwekerijpercelen.
