Om het vliegveld in de 'Kleyne Vlakte' en de verdedigingscomplexen in het noorden van 'De Zwinduinen en –polders' te verdedigen, werd in het begin van de jaren 1940 een antitankgracht aangelegd. Dit gebeurde ten westen van het vliegveld en is hier nog steeds zichtbaar. Ook in het weiland wat verderop in de 'Kleyne Vlakte' kan je de sporen van de antitankgracht nog zien. Deze gracht werd door de Duitse ingenieurs aangelegd op een restant van een oude geul uit de 19de eeuw toen het huidige bos-, weide- en duingebied nog een strandvlakte was.
