Rond het Stocletpaleis was er al heel wat geruzie.
Het gebouw is van de ontwerper Josef Hoffmann en is zijn meesterwerk. Het Stocletpaleis is privé-eigendom en houdt koppig de deuren op slot. Zoals het Stocletpaleis is er in heel Brussel geen tweede. Adolphe Stoclet woonde begin vorige eeuw in Wenen als directeur van de Generale Maatschappij van België. Daar maakte Josef Hoffmann toen opgang als architect. Voor de hogere burgerij en rijke industriëlen ontwierp hij moderne villa’s en met de Wiener Werkstätte bedacht hij daar ook nog eens tot in de kleinste details een geraffineerd interieur bij. Toen Stoclet onverwacht naar België moest terugkeren, nam hij de architect en zijn plannen gewoon mee. Daarom staat het Stocletpaleis sinds 1911 als enig Wiener Secessionsgebouw te blinken tussen de Brusselse art nouveau. In 2009 is het terecht uitgeroepen tot Unesco Werelderfgoed.
