Nadat Nederland in 1830 de afwatering van het jonge België afsluit, graaft België in 1840 het Leopoldkanaal. Dat voert het polderwater van de Zwinstreek en het Meetjesland af. Voor de afvoer van het Leiewater wordt tussen 1846 en 1860 het Schipdonkkanaal aangelegd.
De bewoners van de streek spreken over de 'stinker' en de 'blinker'. Toen in de Leie nog vlas werd geroot, verspreidde ook het Schipdonkkanaal soms een onprettige geur. Vandaar: de 'stinker'. Het water in het Leopoldkanaal bleef echter vrij zuiver en kreeg dan ook de 'blinker' als bijnaam.
