Après que les Pays-Bas aient fermé le drainage de la jeune Belgique en 1830, la Belgique creuse le canal Léopold en 1840. Cela évacue les eaux de polder de la région de Zwin et de Meetjesland. Pour l'évacuation de l'eau de la Lys, le canal de Schipdonk est construit entre 1846 et 1860.
Les habitants de la région parlent de la 'peste' et de la 'brillante'. Lorsque le lin était encore roui dans la Lys, le canal de Schipdonk répandait parfois une odeur désagréable. D'où : la 'peste'. L'eau dans le canal Léopold est cependant restée assez pure et a donc reçu le surnom de 'brillante'.
