Het neoclassicistisch kasteeltje maakt onderdeel uit van een kasteelsite die in 1800 werd gebouwd. Het woord 'Raepen' verwijst niet naar het knolgewas, maar via een schrijffoutje naar Paepen of monniken. Het kasteel is gelegen in de Lakebossen. Dit bosgebied was vroeger immers eigendom van de Brugse Ter Duinendabdij.
