De in 1971 opgerichte haven strekt zich uit over 460 ha 30 km langs de Sambre en het Kanaal Charleroi–Brussel. Via dit kanaal is de haven verbonden met het Vlaamse binnenvaartnet.
De watergebonden overslag van de haven bereikte in 1974 1 miljoen ton, maar nam sindsdien gestaag af tot 1992. In 1992 werd ongeveer 0,45 miljoen ton watergebonden omgeslagen. Van 1992 tot 2001 steeg de overslag tot ongeveer 2,5 miljoen ton. Sindsdien is die overslag gestabiliseerd.
