Den i 1971 etablerede havn strækker sig over 460 ha 30 km langs Sambre og Kanalen Charleroi–Bruxelles. Gennem denne kanal er havnen forbundet med det flamske indre vandvejsnet.
Den vandbaserede godshåndtering i havnen nåede i 1974 1 million ton, men er siden da konstant faldet indtil 1992. I 1992 blev der håndteret omkring 0,45 millioner ton vandbaseret gods. Fra 1992 til 2001 steg håndteringen til omkring 2,5 millioner ton. Siden da er denne håndtering stabiliseret.
