Het werd opgericht op 5 april 1779 door François-Charles de Velbrück tijdens zijn regeerperiode als prins-bisschop van Luik. Het had als doel zijn leden te voorzien van kranten en boeken in een gezellige sfeer, naar het voorbeeld van andere literaire verenigingen uit die tijd, zoals het Cabinet littéraire de Verviers, de Société littéraire de Huy, de Société royale littéraire de Hasselt, de Cercle de l'Union van Maastricht, de "Aachener Casino Club" in Aken, de Société littéraire de Gent, de Société de littérature van Brussel, en het beroemde Gabinetto Vieusseux.
