Linkeroever werd eind 19e eeuw stelselmatig opgehoogd. De omgeving van Sint-Anneke was één van de eerste gebieden waar slib en grof zand aangevoerd werden. Op de nieuwe ondergrond ontstond een schraal duinenlandschap, dat ongetwijfeld heeft bijgedragen tot het ontstaan en het succes van de horecacluster met zandstrand. Belangrijk bij de instandhouding van het zanderig landschap is de dynamiek van de wind ter hoogte van de vooruitstekende Scheldebocht. Vanaf Sint-Anneke is er een mooi zicht op het restant van het Noordkasteel, aan de overzijde van de Schelde.
