In 1968 vervulde Jempi Monseré hier een deel van zijn militaire dienstplicht. Hij zat er bijna als enige Vlaming tussen allemaal Franstaligen. Hij won dat jaar het nationaal kampioenschap voor militairen op de weg. Als soldaat-milicien genoot Jempi relatief veel vrijheid. Hij moest alleen maar aardappelen schillen: "de ene kant met schil, de andere zonder. Hij deed gewoon zijn goesting", dixit zus Marie-Claire. Hij werd geselecteerd voor de Olympische Spelen in Mexico en finishte er als 6e.
