Ongeveer in het midden van de Koningsdijk is er op de rechterzijde een rechthoekig terrein met een grote waterplas, een vlaggenmast en een boerderij. Hier stond ooit het Spaanse Fort Spinola. In 1591 veroverde prins Maurits van Nassau de stad Hulst tijdelijk op de Spanjaarden. Er werden strooptochten georganiseerd in het Waasland. Onder meer de kerk van Sint-GillisWaas raakte daarbij zwaar beschadigd. Als antwoord bouwden de Spanjaarden dit fort. Zandwinning en de uitbouw van een boerderij zorgden er echter voor dat het vandaag vrijwel onzichtbaar is.
