Op deze plek stond één van de grote kanonnen van het Duitse leger, de Lange Max. Eigenlijk waren dit kanonnen die bestemd waren voor slagschepen, het is 17 meter lang en weegt 75 ton. Een projectiel weegt 750 kilogram. Het was de Duitse admiraal Max Rogge die het plan had om deze kanonnen aan land te gebruiken voor lange afstanden, vandaar de naam.
Vanaf Juni 1917 wordt het ingezet om de haven van Duinkerke te beschieten. De bommen doen er anderhalve minuut over tot Duinkerke. Vanuit de Belgische stellingen worden ze geobserveerd en een minuut voor aankomst doorgebeld naar Duinkerke. Het kanon maakt 114 doden, ook in Koksijde, Nieuwpoort en Bergues.
In 1941 werd het kanon ontmanteld door de Duitse bezetter omwille van het metaal. Nu is er een museum waar het verhaal van de Lange Max en het Marinekorps Flanders verteld wordt.
