En este lugar se encontraba uno de los grandes cañones del ejército alemán, el Lange Max. En realidad, eran cañones destinados a acorazados, mide 17 metros de largo y pesa 75 toneladas. Un proyectil pesa 750 kilogramos. Fue el almirante alemán Max Rogge quien tuvo el plan de usar estos cañones en tierra para largas distancias, de ahí su nombre.
A partir de junio de 1917, se utiliza para bombardear el puerto de Dunkerque. Las bombas tardan un minuto y medio en llegar a Dunkerque. Desde las posiciones belgas, son observadas y un minuto antes de la llegada se avisa a Dunkerque. El cañón causa 114 muertes, también en Koksijde, Nieuwpoort y Bergues.
En 1941, el cañón fue desmantelado por el ocupante alemán debido al metal. Ahora hay un museo donde se cuenta la historia del Lange Max y el Cuerpo de Marina de Flandes.
