De oorsprong van Waarschoot gaat terug tot 1244, toen de bisschop van Doornik de nieuwe parochie afscheidde van Zomergem. De ontginningswoede van woeste gronden door de graven van Vlaanderen betekende het begin van deze nederzetting. De Sint-Ghislenuskerk was een gotisch kerkje, dat kort na 1250 gebouwd werd. Meerdere verbouwingen en uitbreidingen zorgden ervoor dat de kerk breder was dan ze lang was: 45 bij 30 m. Op nieuwjaarsnacht 2001-2002 is ze echter afgebrand. Enkel de toren bleef overeind en wordt nu gerestaureerd. De bouw van een nieuwe kerk werd voltooid in 2006.
