De Gentse Plantentuin werd 1797 ondergebracht bij de Baudeloo-abdij. Bij de oprichting van de Universiteit in 1817 werd de tuin ter beschikking gesteld van de Universiteit. Ruim een eeuw later werd de Plantentuin overgebracht naar de huidige locatie aan het Citadelpark en is het een onderdeel van het Botanisch Instituut. Van het oorspronkelijke ontwerp van architect Cloquet blijft enkel de tuinomheining over. Binnen het Flore de Gand project staat de Plantentuin in voor de inventarisatie van de historische herbaria van Charles Van Hoorebeke en Aimé en Julius Mac Leod. Deze herbaria bieden een unieke inkijk in de Gentse flora rond respectievelijk 1815 en 1850-1900. Uit de eerste projectresultaten blijkt dat maar liefst een derde van de wilde planten zeer zeldzaam zijn geworden of zelfs zijn verdwenen. Wil je meer weten?
