Zoals Pascal Verbeken beschrijft in zijn boek Brutopia is Het Rad een openluchtmuseum van een eeuw sociale woningbouw, of een rood Bokrijk. In de Duivenmelkersstraat tref je de eerste voorlopers aan van de tuinwijk. Krap bemeten rijwoningen uit het jaar 1907. Later werden de woningen iets groter, maar in de jaren 30, 50 en 70 schakelde men toch over naar appratementen omdat de kosten van de tuinverkavelingen te duur bleken te zijn.
