Lijn 150 werd gebouwd door de Belgische Staatsspoorwegen om de benedenloop van de Samber te verbinden met de Franse Ardennen: twee industriebekkens die via de waterweg met elkaar verbonden waren, maar waarvoor het spoor een belangrijke versnelling betekende. Dit gedeelte wordt ook wel "Ligne de la Molignée" genoemd, genoemd naar de rivier waarvan het dal volgt.
